How to Protect your ATV from UV Damage
When you purchase a new ATV, you want it to look as good as new for years to come. While you may regularly wash it and keep it well maintained, there is one threat that you may not have on your radar. The sun can have a huge impact on your ATV's plastics, causing them to fade and become brittle over time. The sun's rays can also deteriorate your seat fabric. We get it – it's easy to hop off your ATV after a day of riding and hurry inside. After all, you'll be riding again tomorrow or in a few days. UV damage adds up faster than you might think, so it's important to stay on top of protecting your ATV from it as much as possible. Here are a few ways you can prevent unnecessary UV ray damage and, in turn, protect your ATV from other harmful elements in the process.
Park Against the Side of a Building
If you're grabbing a bite to eat or stepping away from your machine for just a bit, you can keep it out of the sun by simply parking in a shaded area against a building. This could be the side of your home, cabin, or other location. No building in the area? Find a shaded spot like beneath a tall tree or bush. This isn't the best protection, but when you're in a pinch, it will cut down on the UV damage.
An ATV Cover
Heavy-duty ATV covers are excellent options to keep sun damage at bay. If you don't have the space or budget for an outdoor shed, a cover designed specifically for ATVs can serve as a shield for your four-wheeler. You might say, "I could use a tarp in the same way!" Something like a tarp or a plastic sheet can only provide so much protection. It would be best to choose an option that you'll get your money's worth out of instead. ATV covers are typically made with synthetic fabrics like polyester or nylon that help protect your ATV while not in use. Not only will you be protecting your ATV from UV damage, but from rain and windblown debris as well.
After a ride, you can simply tuck your four-wheeler in for the evening with a cover. It's hardly an extra step, taking just a moment to position the cover on correctly.
An Outdoor Shed
Having an outdoor shed is the most ideal solution for keeping your ATV in excellent condition and away from the elements. They're wonderful if you don't have a garage, as they act as secure storage for your ATV. Whether you choose a small or large shed, ensure that it can fit properly with space on all sides. Once inside, your ATV will be out of the sun so the plastics and seat fabric will be unaffected. Plus, it'll be away from the dangers of moisture caused by rain. If your shed has windows and you're still fearful that UV rays are reaching your machine, simply shield it with an ATV specific cover for double the blockage.
Use A Protectant
When you're cleaning your ATV, a good product to include in your washing and detailing supplies is a protectant. These products are designed to protect your plastics, meaning they help prevent UV rays, dirt, and more from causing serious damage. They're easy to apply and typically don't have an oily residue after application. Get into the habit of using a protectant product every time you wash your ATV.
When you take the time to properly shield your ATV from UV damage, you'll notice the fruits of your labor over the years. Your plastics and seat fabric won't be faded or cracked, maintaining their original luster and color. Want to really see the difference? Check out a buddy's ATV to see how they keep it protected.
